Where is the Nihonbashi Exit of Tokyo Station?

JR Tokyo Station is the gateway to Tokyo, the capital of Japan, where approximately 14 million people live. It is a huge terminal station where the Shinkansen, conventional train lines, and subway lines converge, making it an important starting point for many travelers. For locals who are familiar with the area, it is a very convenient station for various transfers. However, the large station is filled with people, platforms and exits. It's like a dungeon in a role-playing game. If this is your first time at JR Tokyo Station, you'll definitely get lost in no time!
The Nihonbashi Exit of Tokyo Station is located at the northernmost part of the station. It may not be very familiar to you, but it is often less crowded than the other ticket gates, and is actually convenient not only for transferring but also for using stores and passing through.

First, check where the Nihonbashi Exit is!

The Nihonbashi Exit is the northernmost ground-level exit at Tokyo Station, and is located at (9) in the image below. There is also a slightly different name, (16)the GRANSTA Underground North Exit, on the north basement floor of Tokyo Station.
Let's take a closer look, starting with the Nihonbashi Exit.

Please note that the ticket gates you pass through vary depending on which line you take!

The Nihonbashi Exit is divided into "Ticket gates for the Tohoku, Joetsu, and Hokuriku Shinkansen" and "Ticket gates for the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen."
The ticket gates for the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen at the Nihonbashi Exit are marked by JR Central's brand color, blue.

The Nihonbashi Exit ticket gate for the Tohoku, Joetsu, and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines is one of the hardest ticket gates to find at Tokyo Station, so we'll show you how to get to it.
Looking toward the outside of the building (the north side of Tokyo Station) from the ticket gate for the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen, you will see a Starbucks on your right. Group buses arrive at this exit, so if you arrive at Tokyo Station on a group tour or other trip, you will enter the station from this entrance.
Also, if you exit from this entrance, turn right and walk a short distance you will reach Tokyo Metro Nihonbashi Station.

When you turn left here, you'll come to a passageway that gradually narrows, and up ahead is the ticket gate for the Tohoku, Joetsu, and Hokuriku Shinkansen. The sign is small and the ceiling is low, so it's hard to find, but this ticket gate is marked by the JR East brand color, green.

Unfortunately, there are no ticket gates for JR lines (conventional lines) at the Nihonbashi exit. If you are using the JR lines, please use the nearest ticket gate, the Yaesu North Exit.

Many restaurants right next to the Nihonbashi exit

Near the ticket gates for the Tohoku, Joetsu, and Hokuriku Shinkansen at the Nihonbashi exit, there is a restaurant area called Yaekita Shokudo, where many restaurants are gathered. They are close to the ticket gates, so you can enjoy a meal during your short break between transfers.

There are also ticket gates in the basement

The GRANSTA underground north exit ticket gate is directly connected to “GRANSTA Tokyo”

Between Yaekita Shokudo and the Yaesu North Exit ticket gates, there is a North Free Passageway that allows you to travel between the Yaesu side (east side of Tokyo Station) and the Marunouchi side (west side) without going through the ticket gates. Partway through this passageway, there are stairs that lead down to the basement, and beyond those are the ticket gates for GRANSTA Underground North Exit.
Once you enter the ticket gates, you'll be in the GRANSTA Tokyo retail area, making it convenient for shopping before catching the train.

The GRANSTA Underground North Exit ticket gate is exclusively for transportation IC card users. If you are using a ticket, please use another ticket gate such as the Yaesu North Exit.

Go straight from the ticket gate to “Square Zero” where there is a rest area

If you go straight after passing through the ticket gates at the GRANSTA Underground North Exit, you will come to "Square Zero," the center of GRANSTA Tokyo where many shops are gathered. Here, you will find a Nursery for baby that is convenient for breastfeeding and changing diapers, as well as an exhibition corner that tells the history of Tokyo Station and JR express trains, and a rest area. Please stop by for a break during your trip.
