How to ride the bus in Tokyo?
Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is home to a population of about 14 million people and has many convenient means of transportation, including JR lines, subways, and private railways. Among these, buses are surprisingly underused for getting around the city. How to ride a bus varies depending on the area, so it can be a bit difficult to ride one when traveling.
Of the buses that run in Tokyo, the Toei bus (operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation) has a relatively large number of routes and runs, and it is very convenient as it stops at many destinations within Tokyo's 23 wards.
Here is a complete guide to how to ride Toei buses! Read this article to learn how to use Toei buses conveniently and effectively!

Toei buses are public transport operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation. They are characterised by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's symbolic ginkgo leaf mark and green and orange colouring. The route number and final destination are displayed on the front of the bus, and main stops are displayed on the side of the bus.
Looking at the route map of the Toei bus (quoted from the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation website), we can see that it is mainly located within the 23 wards of Tokyo. Even in areas where you would need to transfer by train, Toei buses can take you directly to your destination. For example, there is the direct route from Tokyo Station to Shin-Toyosu Station (the closest bus stop to Toyosu Market), and from Toyosu Station to Tokyo Skytree Station.
To board a Toei bus, you board through the front door and pay in advance. There are two doors on the bus, one at the front and one at the back. You board through the front door (in the red frame in the image below) and pay the fare in advance when you board.
Within Tokyo's 23 wards, the fare is a flat rate of 210 yen for adults and 110 yen for children aged 6-11. For infants aged 1-5, up to two infants per adult are free, and the third and subsequent infants are charged the child fare.
Fares can be paid with cash or a transportation IC card (such as PASMO or Suica). When paying with cash, only coins or 1000 yen bills are accepted. If you do not have enough money on your IC card, you can top up your card in 1000 yen increments with 1000 yen bills. Also, if you tell the driver how many people you are using before paying, you can pay for multiple people with one transportation IC card.
If you pay with a transportation IC card, the child fare will be discounted to 105 yen, saving you 5 yen!
When you want to get off, press the button inside the bus before you arrive at your bus stop to tell the driver that you want to get off. When you arrive at your bus stop, get off through the door at the back of the bus (blue framed in the image below).
Have a nice trip!
